very nice.
How do you do the stripe? Paint the entire body silver, mask the stripe, then spray the blue?

They're gorgeous! Are they fast? Why did you use the 'slot' - scout cars?

Exactly right 5 J's. After priming and sanding with 400 grit, I sprayed just the top and back silver...the sides just got whatever overspray landed on them. After drying a couple hours, I used some Testors 0.5 inch model masking tape for the stripe, then sprayed the blue. While the blue was still wet, I peeled back the tape to avoid any edge lifting. I finished it off with 3 coats of clear, a light 800 grit sanding and 3 more coats of clear. Yep, Pipe Cleaner, I'm building these to some strict scout rules, so unfortunately I had to use slots They'd better be fast...if I built 2 slow cars, I'm gonna have a fit. I already know that the 'backup' car has a slightly toed out rear left axle slot...but at least the wheel will drift to the nail instead of to the body. I think I can shim it if it comes to that. Oh, and a racing stripe shaves off 0.01 seconds based on my track testing

Mopar Electric blue is one of my son's favorite colors.
We used Mopar Bright Silver Metallic (WS2 code) for the accent. It has a very "coarse" metallic, really catches the light.
We shot the silver first, let that flashoff. Then masked for the blue.
Here's tip for ya, use the green 3M autobody masking tape. Costs a bit more, but gives really crisp clean lines.
Great job !!

Nice paint job FAST! That is some nice coarse silver. I'll have to keep an eye out at work for it. One of the perks of my job is the ability to make aerosols of nearly any paint color I want...so I just happened to make some aerosols of these two colors, and a few other automotive pearls. I almost used Kia Titanium Silver for the stripe... Thanks for the tape tip...its hard to find quality masking tape that doesn't bleed with solvent based paint. My roll of Testors tape is almost empty.

Very nice MGH. Was it enamel? I haven't tried painted on stripes and I've been using duplicolor and not getting a high gloss finish. I haven't gotten into sanding much so I know that's a huge part of it. But I'm collecting data to give it a try next time.
How about Pete & Repeat, Nook and Cranny, Ka and Ching, Lay & Low, Mork and Mindy?
By the way, why make twin cars? I see that a lot and wondered why people do it?

Very nice MGH, care to share paint type and methods? I haven't tried painted on stripes and I've been using duplicolor and not getting a high gloss finish. I haven't gotten into sanding much so I know that's a huge part of it. But I'm collecting data to give it a try next time. How about Pete & Repeat, Nook and Cranny, Ka and Ching, Lay & Low, Mork and Mindy? By the way, why make twin cars? I see that a lot and wondered why people do it? Well...I'd LOVE to share the paint type...but its actually not available for retail purchase just yet...so I'll let you know when/where you can get it when its out. I can tell you it is an automotive refinish lacquer...same stuff they use at body shops. I would NEVER use enamel on a pinewood car...it takes waaaay too long to fully cure. The clear coat is something I put together in the lab ;D Sanding is the real key. If the primer layer isn't smooth...nothing else will be. I sand to 400 grit on the primer, then use 800 or 1000 for the color and clear coats...but you could go finer if you're really picky. LOL about the car names...I'm liking the Pete and Repeat! I've got a couple reasons for twin cars in this case. I need a car for myself and I also planned on making one for a coworker. I'm going to use the faster one for me and give him the slower one. For next years scout race my coworker has expressed an interest in having all the scouts in his den make identical cars...with a different stripe color to differentiate them...kind of like a pinewood racing team.

I figured it was lacquer when you said you taped it off after a few hours, just wanted to make sure. I'm not having issues with application, and my primer coat looks good. I just can't get a high gloss shine. Apparently it's my lack of sanding paint coats, and polishing the clear..... guess I have to stop being lazy if I want that high gloss look

The identical cars thing is an interesting idea! I like it. I do wonder at that young age if the kids will love it or not. Taking away all the individuality might not go over that well... at least if that's their only car.... How about you have a friendly race off between 2 packs, and for the race off they make team cars! Hey maybe you can start a new trend.. .hmm. Lots of dads not into might not want to make 2 cars though... We had several 2oz cars show up this year at pack
