My name is Scott Ricks aka"Beaker", and I am from Conyers Ga. This is our 5th year racing, and it's all Cougar Dogs fault. See, 5 years ago, my oldest boy decided to sign up for a Royal Ambassador PWD race at out church. I didn't have a clue what to do, but we built the car anyway, I mean really, how hard could this be. Well, that year, we got it handed to us. Our car wouldn't even finish the length of the track.
There was dad there who's boys dominated the race. And the dad dominated in the adult class. He had really thin designed cars, with smooth paint jobs, and the cars were fast! I thought to myself after that race, I don't know how I am gonna do it, but next year, I'm gonna beat that guy. And thus, my Pine Wood Derby adventure started.
I spent the next year studying everything PWD. I bought all the tools, bought a track, and joined all the different discussion boards. I then became consumed with all things PWD. It's an addiction.
But it all paid off, as we had by that time joined Cub Scouting, and we won our Pack and District race that year! But I still couldn't beat Cougar Dog in RAs. But his number was up for the next year, LOL.
The following year, we won our Pack and District race again in Cub Scouting, and we also won our church race, Regional race, and State championship in Ras. I finally beat Cougar Dog. All kidding aside, I'm picking on Cougar, we have in the last few years, because of this hobby, become very good friends. Though sometimes, I think he only likes me because I have a track set up in my basement.
We have gone on to win our Pack and District races 2 more times, and for the last three, I have put on workshops for the pack, and all our boys from the pack dominate at the District level. I have three more years before my youngest crosses over to Boy Scouts, then I guess we can retire.
I have raced in three leagues, WIRL, PWDR, and PDDR over the last few years, though recently I haven't been able to race, due to financial reasons. Hopefully when things get better, I can get back to racing. The crowning moment in my league racing career was when I won the Super Pro Mod King of the Hill at PDDR in 2009.
I have made many many friends over the last 5 years in the PWD community, and everyone is awesome with sharing information. There are a lot of really good people in this hobby. The products and tools have come a long way in the past few years, and the cars just keep getting faster and faster. I just hope when I am able to get back to league racing, I don't get embarrassed to bad.
